The Best Alec Guinness Quotes

Ben: I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did.
Luke: What is it?
Ben: Your father's light saber. This is the weapon of a Jedi Knight. Not as clumsy or random as a blaster; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age. For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times... before the Empire.

Ben: That's no moon. It's a space station.

Obi: I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.

Ben: Mos Eisley spaceport: You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.

Ben: The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds the galaxy together.

Ben: Use the Force, Luke.

Luke: How did my father die?
Ben: A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force.

[Ponda Baba gives Luke a rough shove and starts yelling at Luke in an alien language which Luke doesn't understand]
Dr. Evazan: [explaining] He doesn't like you.
Luke: Sorry.
Dr. Evazan: [grabbing Luke] *I* don't like you either. You just watch yourself. We're wanted men. I have the death sentence on twelve systems.
Luke: I'll be careful.
Dr. Evazan: You'll be dead!
Ben: [intervening] This little one's not worth the effort. Come, let me get you something.
[Dr. Evazan shoves Luke across the room and pulls out a blaster]
Bartender: No blasters! No blasters!
[Obi-Wan ignites his lightsaber, wounding Dr. Evazan and severing Ponda Baba's arm]

Ben: There was nothing you could have done, Luke, had you been there. You'd have been killed too, and the droids would now be in the hands of the Empire.
Luke: I want to come with you to Alderaan. There's nothing for me here now. I want to learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi like my father.

Ben: In my experience, there's no such thing as luck.

Princess: General Kenobi. Years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars. Now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I am unable to present my father's request to you in person, but my ship has fallen under attack, and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed. I have placed information vital to the survival of the Rebellion into the memory systems of this R2 unit. My father will know how to retrieve it. You must see this droid safely delivered to him on Alderaan. This is our most desperate hour. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You're my only hope.
[pause]
Ben: [to Luke] You must learn the ways of the Force, if you're to come with me to Alderaan.
Luke: Alderaan? I'm not going to Alderaan, I've gotta get *home*, it's late, I'm in for it as it is!
Ben: I need your help, Luke. She needs your help. I'm getting too old for this sort of thing.
Luke: Look, I can't get involved. I've got work to do. It's not that I like the Empire; I hate it, but there's nothing I can do about it right now... It's all such a long way from here.
Ben: That's your uncle talking.

Yoda: Why wish you become Jedi?
Luke: Well, mostly because of my father, I guess.
Yoda: Ahh... father. Powerful Jedi was he. Powerful Jedi.
Luke: [suspicious] Oh, come on! How can you know my father? You don't even know who I am. Oh, I don't even know what I'm doing here! We're wasting our time!
Yoda: [Looking away from Luke] I cannot teach him. The boy has no patience.
Obi: [voice-over] He will learn patience.
Yoda: Much anger in him... like his father.
Obi: [voice] Was I any different when you taught me?

Han: Han Solo. I'm captain of the Millennium Falcon. Chewie here tells me you're lookin' for passage to the Alderaan system?
Ben: Yes indeed, if it's a fast ship.
Han: Fast ship? You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon?
Ben: Should I have?
Han: It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. I've outrun Imperial starships. Not the local bulk cruisers mind you, I'm talking about the big Corellian ships now. She's fast enough for you old man. What's the cargo?
Ben: Only passengers. Myself, the boy, two droids... and no questions asked.
Han: [chuckles] What is it? Some kind of local trouble?
Ben: Let's just say we'd like to avoid any Imperial entanglements.

Ben: [to R2-D2] Hello there.
[R2 beeps]
Ben: Come here, my little friend. Don't be afraid.
[R2 beeps a question]
Ben: Oh don't worry, he'll be alright.

Luke: [approaching R2-D2] I can't do it, R2. I can't go on alone.
Obi: [from out of sight] Yoda and I will always be with you.
Luke: Obi-Wan.
[Obi-Wan's spirit approaches Luke]
Luke: Ben! Why didn't you tell me? You told me that Darth Vader betrayed and murdered my father.
Obi: Your father... was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. He ceased to be the Jedi Anakin Skywalker and "became" the Sith Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So, what I told you was true... from a certain point of view.
Luke: A certain point of view?
Obi: Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. Anakin was a good friend. When I first met him, your father was already a great pilot. But I was amazed how strongly the Force was with him. I took it upon myself to train him as a Jedi. I thought that I could instruct him just as well as Yoda. I was wrong.
Luke: There is still good in him.
Obi: He's more machine now than man. Twisted and evil.
Luke: I can't do it, Ben.
Obi: You cannot escape your destiny. You must face Darth Vader again.
Luke: I can't kill my own father.
Obi: Then the Emperor has already won. You were our only hope.
Luke: Yoda spoke of another.
Obi: The other he spoke of is your twin sister.
Luke: But I have no sister.
Obi: Hmm. To protect you both from the Emperor, you were hidden from your father when you were born. The Emperor knew, as I did, if Anakin were to have any offspring, they would be a threat to him. That is the reason why your sister remains safely anonymous.
Luke: Leia! Leia is my sister.
Obi: Your insight serves you well. Bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They do you credit, but they could be made to serve the Emperor.

Luke: [32:37] No, my father didn't fight in the Clone Wars. He was a navigator on a spice freighter.
Ben: That's what your uncle told you. He didn't hold with your father's ideals; he felt he should've stayed here and not gotten involved.
Luke: You fought in the Clone Wars?
Ben: Yes. I was once a Jedi knight, the same as your father.
Luke: I wish I'd known him.
Ben: He was the best star pilot in the galaxy, and a cunning warrior. I understand that you've become quite a good pilot yourself.
[sorrowfully]
Ben: And he was a good friend.

Ben: The Force will be with you, always.

Obi: Rey.
Yoda: Rise in the Force.
Kanan: In the heart of a Jedi lies her strength.
Obi: Rise.
Qui: Rise.
Luke: Rey, the Force will be with you, always.

Stormtrooper: Let me see your identification.
Ben: [with a small wave of his hand] You don't need to see his identification.
Stormtrooper: We don't need to see his identification.
Ben: These aren't the droids you're looking for.
Stormtrooper: These aren't the droids we're looking for.
Ben: He can go about his business.
Stormtrooper: You can go about your business.
Ben: Move along.
Stormtrooper: Move along... move along.
